Well, the fact that I'm not from the East Coast helped me a lot. But that's not something you have control over. I listed absolutely everything on my application that I've ever done, in terms of volunteer work. Also, I'm really into communications, and I definately made that clear on my application. I wrote passionately and personally about why I love journalism, and I imagine that the admissions committee, though they probably weren't impressed with my test scores, felt like I would sieze an opportunity to learn more about my journalistic passion and love my education. That's what got me in, really: they saw my passion. Advice: Pretend that they have only one more spot to fill, and you are one of ten finalists for it. The admissions people are discussing the pros and cons of each applicant. When they refer to you, what do they call you? Are you the person dedicated to sports? They could call you "sports nut." Are you looking forward to a career in the clergy? They could call you "priest." Make yourself known as the "whatever", so that you're not just another well-rounded student. Well-roundedness is overrated, and it's easy to spot on an application. Good luck! And treat the application professionally!

Syracuse only plans to accept about half of its applicants for the coming year and is ranked #52 nationally in US News. It's important to distinguish yourself among the applicant pool. It's also a good idea to apply to more than one college (especially if you're interested in Newhouse) at Syracuse. Students who apply to SU often apply to Georgetown, Boston College, Boston University, Northwestern, New York University, George Washington, Washington University in St. Louis, and the Universities of Michigan and Virginia, respectively. Entrance into the Honors Program is available through a student's sophomore year if he or she is not admitted upon acceptance to SU.
